FSPS Outstanding Among Urban Schools
The Education Week “Diplomas Count” study, sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, determined that among the nation’s urban school districts, the Fort Smith Public School District exceeds statistical expectations by 18%. The comparison of graduation rates placed Fort Smith just behind the Warren Township District in Indianapolis, IN and Texarkana, TX Independent School District which both recorded a graduation index 21% above the expected numbers. Fort Smith’s 84% Graduation Rate was, however, second only to the Yuba City United School District in Yuba, CA, which was credited with an 85% Graduation Rate. The analysis identified school districts that matched the profile of the nation’s largest urban districts and singled out those with the highest rates of graduation.

Dr. Benny Gooden, Superintendent of Schools, credits excellent instruction by highly qualified teachers, continuing emphasis on good attendance, as well as the varied safety nets that exist within the District to ensure that all students are successful today and in the future.

As a part of the national Day of Remembrance activities, Sunnymede Elementary School third graders and their teachers listened to and participated in a program presented by Fort Smith fire fighters Capt. Stanley Cole, Michael Martin and Craig Neal. Third-grade Teacher Sara Moore, suited up with Fire Fighter Michael Martin to the delight of 100 third-graders. She described the incredible weight of the fire suit as each piece was added. Additionally, the fire fighters talked with the students about fire safety and answered dozens of questions.
